The main motivation for this style of trading is to make money every day so you don’t sit on the shares , plus of course you eliminate the risk that the shares go down in value overnight. the motivation of this style of trading is to reduce the risk of holding a position overnight where the open price may have significantly changed from the previous day’s closing price.

NASDAQ defined day trading by saying somebody is a Daytrader if he makes more than four buy and sell orders over a five-day period.

Prior to the year 2000 it was not uncommon for some of the most successful Daytraders to make more than a million dollars in a single day.

There were dozens of Daytrading Chatrooms where people were “told” what to buy and when to buy it.
Some Chatrooms had more than 500 members.

And most Daytraders, it is estimated as high as 99%, lost their shirt.
One of the reasons they lost their shirt is because they could trade on Margin.

Trading on Margin means that the brokerage firm which executes your trades will lend you up to 5 times your investment.
So if you had $10,000 in your trading account you could in some cases trade with $50,000.

However, if you lost on your trades, repayment was due immediately.

Since the heady dot com days of the year 2000 DayTrading has gone out of style and out of range.

Most brokerage firms have gone under or have consolidated, and staff has been reduced in the remaining firms by about 80%.

Trades that used to cost $35 to execute can now be had for as low as $4.-

Initially it happened because President Bush talked the economy down and Mr Greenspan kept on raising the interest rate to such a level that all optimism disappeared from the Market.

Up until this time like clockwork 2 or 3 days a week there were Stocks, mainly Internet Stocks, that would rise more than 30% early in the morning and then fall the same amount five minutes before closing so people could take profit.

If you were on the ball you could make a lot of money as a DayTrader.

You could also lose a lot of money.

Those days no longer exist.

It is very rare to see stocks vary more than 30% in one day so the profit potential first of all is not as great, and the ability to catch a percentage of the increase in the price of a stock has also lessened.

One of the reasons also is that Internet Stocks which were totally overvalued are no longer overvalued and as a matter of fact have risen much less than any other type of Stock.

Another reason is that there are very few IPO’s and even Google’s IPO did not take off for quite some time.

If it was not for the spectacular performance of Google , Internet Stocks lost more than 8% in 2005.

Even Ebay lost more than a quarter of its value.

However, if you are shrewd, you can still make money as a DayTrader but it ain’t easy.

If you could get news about this company very early you could make a lot of money.

Not many people know that you can trade the NASDAQ Stock Market as early as 6 AM.

So if you are a Stock Market News Hound and like to get up really early in the morning and have nerves of steel you could buy the stock at 6 AM and sell it at 9.29 AM to everybody else starting a regular trading day.

This will not happen very often, the fact that there is spectacular news.

But if you are patient it may happen once a month.

Introduction to Futures

I am frequently asked why a person would want to trade futures. I can think of numerous reasons. However it all boils down to hedging or speculating.

For those of you who are not aware of the futures market, a futures contract is an agreement between two people. The purchaser of the contract agrees to take delivery of a standardized amount of a commodity at a specific price and by a specific date. The standardized commodity might be corn, gold or a basket full of stocks. The seller of the contract agrees to make delivery of a standardized amount of a commodity, at a specific price and by a specific date.

Hedgers are people who are attempting to protect themselves. For instance, farmers producing a crop might consider selling a futures contract to lock in a price for their crop. A plastics manufacturer fearful that the price of petroleum might trade higher might consider purchasing crude oil futures as a way to partially hedge his costs for raw materials. Or mortgage bankers, concerned that interest rates might decline might consider buying 30-year treasury bond futures. The futures markets have many products and contracts that might offer users and producers protection from price swings in the cash markets.

People who anticipate a price swing in the markets and attempt to profit from it through the purchase or sale of futures contracts or options on those contracts would be speculators. For example, a person who thinks that inflation is rearing its ugly head might consider buying gold futures. A person who feels that the stock market is too high or too low might consider buying or selling any one of a number of stock index futures. The futures markets offer an e-mini S&P, an e-mini Dow Jones and an e-mini NASDAQ futures contracts just to name a few. The “e” in e-mini denotes that the contract is electronically traded on the internet. The “mini” in e-mini denotes that the contract is a smaller contract than the full size contract and consequently it might have a smaller margin. Traders should also note that there is a “mini” contract without the “e” that is pit traded as is the case for instance with the mini grains.

One of the main reasons people trade futures is leverage. Futures contracts are bought and sold on margin. Traders are able to control a large amount of a commodity or cash instrument with a comparatively small amount of capital. Margins are determined by the futures exchanges. They look at the size of the contract, the volatility of the market and other things to try to determine the risk involved. Margins may rise and fall as the volatility increase or decreases.

When a trader buys or sells a futures contract, they are required to put up the “initial margin” by the close of business. The following day the margin will revert to the “maintenance margin”. As the price of a futures contract rises and falls, profits and losses are added or subtracted from a traders account at the close of business. This is called “marked to market”. If a traders account balance drops below the “maintenance margin” level, at the close of business, then the trader is issued a “margin call”. At that point the trader has to decide whether to accept the loss and exit the position or to meet the margin call. To meet the margin call the trader would need to send funds that would bring his account balance back up to the level of the “initial margin”. On the other hand, profits from trades can be used as margin for newly established positions.

If you would like to trade futures contracts or options on those contracts, you need to open a futures trading account. This account can be opened with a Futures Commission Merchant or an introducing broker for that FCM. A “FCM” is a firm that is licensed by the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission to solicit or accept orders for the purchase or sale of futures contracts.

Ever dreamt of giving up the daily grind? Want to strike out on your own and work from home, but dont know what you could possibly do to make a living? Full time Nasdaq trader Harvey Walsh wondered just that, and now he asks Is day trading the ultimate work from home job?

Weve probably all had the same thought at some time or another, as we trudge off towards another day at work the same work weve been doing day in day out for years surely there has to be a better way? Slaving away to make somebody else rich just doesnt seem right somehow, but what alternative? Setting up a new business, or buying an established one, are both expensive and risky prospects. So how can the disenchanted employee ever hope to make the switch from wage-slave to total independence?

Those are thoughts I had almost every day, before I quit the safety of full time employment and decided to strike out on my own. I asked myself the same question day in and day out; surely there has to be a better way. What about the internet, I wondered, isnt that supposed to be bringing new and exciting opportunities to all? I researched a lot of so-called work-from-home opportunities that promised untold riches, apparently mine for the taking just by sitting in front of my PC. Needless to say, in reality those schemes turned out to be about as fulfilling as, well, filling envelopes for a living. No, I knew there had to be another way something real something where I could be in control of my own destiny.

And then one morning on the train to work, I read about a couple of Wall Street boys who had struck it rich thanks to some huge bonuses, and were now going it alone setting up their own day trading shop. That was when I discovered day trading, and I realised that this was exactly the opportunity I had been searching for. I decided there and then that I was going to make a full time living from the stock markets, whatever it took to succeed.

The advantages of day trading as a job are numerous to say the least; there is no boss to answer to, no customers to satisfy, no suppliers to let you down, no waiting for invoices to be paid, I could go on. In fact, I will: trading is a location-independent activity I can work from anywhere with an internet connection, which effectively means anywhere in the world with a telephone line. I regularly trade from my laptop whilst travelling. I can trade when I feel like it, and take time off when I like, which means I can spend quality time with my family.

Now lets get this straight, trading can be a risky activity, there is no doubt about that. So is driving a car to work, but the risks of getting from A to B on four wheels are well understood and are managed accordingly, to the point where we dont think twice about getting behind the wheel. And in the same way, provided a trader is disciplined in their approach to the job at hand, and understands the associated risks of the work, so those risks can be managed.

On the subject of risk, day trading is almost unique in that it can be learnt and practised with absolutely no financial risk at all, by means of paper-trading that is - trading using freely available simulation software. Thus in the same way a trainee airline pilot wont be let loose into the skies without having learnt and rehearsed their skills in a simulator, so a new trader can employ the same technique before they start trading real money. I sim-traded before I gave up the day-job; it made it easy to leave the safety-net of a monthly pay check knowing from my simulated trading sessions that I could already make money in the markets.

And that brings me to the most satisfying aspect of trading for a living; money. On an average day trading the Nasdaq, it is not unusual to make more money in a couple of hours than I used to make in a whole month working full time as a wage-slave. There are bad days of course, days where things just dont work out, but they pale into insignificance over the course of a week or a month. It certainly took some intensive studying and a lot of practise before becoming a consistently profitable trader. But the end result of that hard work is an immensely valuable life skill that nobody can take away, and which allows for incredible freedom.

Since I first started trading, the learning curve has become even easier for the aspiring day trader, with a multitude of new websites, training courses, and books all covering the subject. I envy anyone starting out in this business today they certainly have many more learning aids available to them than I had at the same point in my own career.

So is day trading the ultimate work-from-home job? No. I firmly believe its the ultimate work-from ANYWHERE job!

Since I publish the trader’s site: www.BanzaiDaddy.com, I’m always getting friends trying to get that ‘golden nugget’ of information from the horse’s mouth ( that would be me - sometimes it’s a different end ).

More than questions, I get the statements : “Man, if I had your information and trading knowledge - I could make a ‘killing’ in the market!” or “Why settle for a little each day, when you could Really clean up?”

My answer ? Don’t get Greedy !

Once you start trading, it’s easy to find yourself in this destructive pattern…

As a beginner, you start out just wanting an extra $100 a day - maybe an extra $ 300 a week. You get lucky. Fantastic trades seem to come easy - too easy. Now that $100 a day is bumped up to $300 a day and that weekly goal gets pushed up to $1,000.

You start to let the dollars get in the way of common sense. You figure if it’s this easy to make money trading - maybe I’ll increase the amount of contracts or the number of shares I trade.

Suddenly instead of trading 500 shares, you’re trading 1,000. Instead of sticking with one or two contracts on the emini, you’re punching in five or ten contracts!

You figure, what the heck…this is like taking candy from a six year old!

Then one day, after weeks of endless wins - the real world hits you in the face.

That 10 contract trade on the Mini Russell all of a sudden starts to turn against you. You stare at the screen in disbelief… This can’t be happening! I’ve been trading this technical pattern for three weeks without one losing trade!

In your cockiness, you’ve stopped using stop loss orders and now your trade is dropping - and Fast! You just ‘know’ it’s going to turn around any minute. You also know that with the Mini Russell each point per contract equals $100. You’re trading 10 contracts ( because that’s the way to make the Big Bucks - right?). That means for ‘every tick’ - you’re either making or losing $100 !

You hold and hold and hold…Seconds go by like hours. You’re frozen. Common sense tells you to ‘bail’. That greedy little voice in the back of your mind tells you to keep watching.

When your pain threshold reaches the limit, you hit the panic button and place a market order to dump everything! Now!

You’ve managed to make $4,000 in the past few weeks and in one fell swoop you’ve just lost $5,000 ! And hopefully you’ve learned a lesson - Don’t get Greedy.

Trading large ‘can’ make you a lot of money. It can also take it faster than you made it.

Since I trade the eminis, let me give you an example of trading just ‘one’ contract at a time.

We’ll assume you will trade five days a week - 50 weeks a year. Holidays won’t be taken into consideration…We’ll also use Five (5) points a day as our target and no commission will be figured.

Trade the S&P 500 emini and you’ll make: $250 / day $1,250 / week $5,000 / month $ 60,000 / year

Trade the Mini Dow and you’ll make: $ 250 / day $ 1,250 / week $ 5,000 / month $ 60,000 / year

Trade the Mini Russell and you’ll make: $ 500 / day $ 2,500 / week $ 10,000 / month $ 120,000 / year

Trade the Mini Nasdaq and you’ll make: $ 100 / day $ 500 / week $ 2,000 / month $ 24,000 / year

On most trading days, you can easily do this in the first two hours of trading - since that’s when most of the action occurs.

So the question is: How much money do you want from two hours of work - average?

If you really want to get grounded, ask yourself what you’d make working two hours in a ‘normal’ job?

Above all, use common sense when trading and don’t trade ‘over your head’. Small, consistent profits over the long haul will win out any day.
